Global standards for rural children – The Kamla Nehru Story

Five years after establishing a school in the Chak Hakim village of Phagwara in Punjab, the management at Kamla Nehru Public School felt the need to get learning support for their students. They were set out to build a school which raised confident global citizens, and needed a strong curriculum to reach their goals.

“The students in our school are first generation learners, whose families have moved abroad for work. Our students mostly live with their grandparents or only mothers. All that these families desire from schooling is that their children should be able to communicate well in English”, says Ms. Paramjeet Kaur Dhillon, Head Teacher at the school.

Kamla Nehru Public School has, however, given its students much more than that. The school opened in 2007 with the challenge of educating children from a non-descript village, who had aspirational parents. In the first 5 years, the school management realized that to raise children who are globally competitive, a well-researched curriculum at par with international standards should become the core of their institution. Secondly, a learning partner must support the professional development of the school faculty, especially considering the gap that exists in teacher training in India.

The school partnered with XSEED Education in 2012. Six years hence, Kamla Nehru Public School (KNPS) has become one of the most sought after international schools in Phagwara. Ms. Dhillon claims to have seen a drastic change in the school, and describes her students as “great communicators” who have a flair for writing poetry and short stories. The classes for these students are facilitated by “a confident group of teachers who understand what education is” and let children express their ideas in class and learn in the process. “We, at KNPS are shaping our young learners, to face the challenges of the future. The pupils are being prepared in 21st century skills. KNPS provides a conducive environment to enrich and empower the young minds”, adds Ms. Dhillon.

Admissions at Kamla Nehru Public School have doubled since 2012 – the first year that XSEED was implemented in the school. “Kamla Nehru Public School has come a long way in providing quality education to surrounding areas of Phagwara region. The school has a culture of promoting discipline and strives for constant improvement. XSEED has had a long partnership with KNPS and with each passing year, the achievement of the school’s students gives us the confidence in our curriculum and methodology.” said Abhijeet Singhal, REO to Kamla Nehru Public School.
