Best practices to involve parents in the education of their children

The three most important stakeholders in education at schools are the faculty, parents and students. Where most curricula focus a lot on in-class interaction between the faculty and students, successful implementation of a learning program is incomplete without meaningful parental involvement.

XSEED develops its curriculum at par with international standards and actively breaks the traditional rote-based learning methods which are dominant across other teaching programs in India. It is therefore important for schools to drive awareness of the benefits and intent of the XSEED methodology among parents. This in turn helps address any doubts that parents may have and provides clarity on the learning process.

Parent Orientation: A parent orientation is a gathering where the school introduces its curriculum and vision for student development and learning for the current academic year. It is usually anchored by the school leader or the head teacher, who engages parents with an oral presentation and videos. The session is usually organized at the beginning of the academic year on an off day or a day when the maximum number of parents are able to attend. A parent orientation is a great way of inducting parents to a new approach to education and building recall of the program for others.

Classroom Observation by Parents: Another effective way to involve parents in the curriculum is by inviting them to school for an hour and letting them observe an XSEED class in action. Parents gain confidence when they observe their children learn first-hand.

Observing Classes by Education Coaches: There are several parents who take an active interest in their child’s learning and have relevant questions about the teaching methodology. Schools can invite parents to interact with the XSEED Education Coaches for a scheduled session, where the EC will be happy to conduct a demo class for them.

Showing Videos of Class: In case parents are unable to attend a classroom observation in-person, schools can record videos of an XSEED class. The aim of a classroom observation must be to show the effectiveness of a curriculum, and in times of increasing digital literacy among parents from across the country, a video demonstration could be as good as a physical classroom observation.

Whichever format you try, it is important to keep parents engaged. Also, it is important for a cohesive and fruitful parent-school relationship, that parents are engaged throughout the academic year, and not just for one session at the beginning.
